The evacuation of the border houses on Bernauer Straße began on the morning of September 24, 1961. When the eviction troops arrived, Marianne S. spontaneously decided to flee. She used a clothes line to slide down a rope from a window at Bernauer Straße 8, but crashed to the pavement five meters below. She was brought to safety by the West Berlin police. Her friend, who was handicapped, remained behind in the apartment and was transferred to Brunnenstraße the same day.
