On the morning of October 3, 1962, 200 teenagers of a tour group were viewing the Berlin Wall. Six of them climbed onto the Wall at Swinemuender Straße to take photographs. The border soldiers demanded that they get off the Wall. When they didn’t obey, the border guards threw smoke grenades. The West Berlin police responded by firing several smoke grenades back at them. The situation settled down a short time later.
