Making Contact

In the early evening of September 2, 1961, about 200 people gathered at Swinemünder Straße and waved across the Wall to West Berlin. Several of the parents in the group lifted their children up in the air. The police patrol was unable to break up the crowd. The crowd was not dispersed until special forces of the East German police arrived about a half an hour later.
